  • & the ones that have been undertaken are shown
  • the Tasks List on the blog has been updated to include the animation assignments
  • Animation assignments have been edited to better explain what we are looking for
  • The Gemini turnaround has been inked for presentation purposes
  • Weekly updates were sent out earlier this week. (Email us if not on mailing list)

Gemini Turnaround

__________________________________________________________________
Here's the turnaround for Gemini!

Gemini Taffeta turnaround. She's a lot of fun to draw because she's a rather curvy girl! Lots of circles.

Things to note:
- Baby head on woman body
- Long, wavy hair with flowy, big curls. Hair is parted down the middle
- baby hands and pudgy fingers
- perfect ": D" and ": )" faces can be made with her
- almost always in heels (how does she do it? she's a cartoon )
- She comes up to about mid-chest on Veil when standing with heels. She's about 5"2 over all.
- Imagine her figure kind of like a thick "8"

Sapphire Fashion Post!

Hello Everyone!

Gemini is not the only one who loves to show off her wardrobe. Her best friend, Sapphire, works hard to have a toned body and is not afraid to work it with her chic, stylish, and sometimes revealing clothing. These designs are created by our ever hard-working designer Lucas, who has created many past fashion designs and always does a marvelous job!

Livestream show - On Dreamweaver

Unofficial Tutorial on Dreamweaver and html applications
Tomorrow approx 1pm EST we will be doing another live-stream. While not a formal tutorial, it will focus primarily on the usage of dreamweaver to create email marketing. Though it will follow Yesenia as she creates the file, we will be available to chat with as well.

Animation Test 01

You need Flash Player to view this test!

Remember we are on the lookout for Flash Animators and AE compositors for the project!

This marks the first test for the upcoming animation(s) for The Taffetas, and so far we've been following our idea for production perfectly. The Gemini turnaround was drawn by me, Tracy Maclauchlan, then the puppet was created in Illustrator by amazing Yesenia Carrero, and finally the puppet was imported into Flash and animated by myself, with compositing and lighting in After Effects. Pretty neat!

Animation Assignments

Hello everyone,
As we near the end of the spring 2011 quarter, we are now getting our puppets ready for animation and, as such, new jobs have opened up for Animators, Compositors, background artists, and colorists.

Before we get to the actual short scene for our pitch, we need help from our crew to test out the puppets we have made. We have to make sure they’re not glitchy for animation, and find what problems we come across when using them so that we can work out the kinks before moving on to more serious business. This is somewhat equivalent to a “rig-test” in 3-D animation.

Thus, we will be shortly opening up a few exercise-like animation tests as our first animation assignments. Though just tests, we are hoping to get nice, polished results from our animators to send off to be spruced up in compositing so that we may use them for promotion, and possibly our pitch package to give sponsors and distributors an idea of the animation style. We’ll need background artists and colorists to help complete some scenes as well.

Gemini Tests

Gemini Walk Cycle (side)
A looping in place profile walk-cycle test, the animator can do whatever he or she wishes as long as it is in character. Ultimately for compositing we’re just looking for some simple effects to make it look more polished, but as of right now no background is planned.

Gemini Walk Cycle (3/4)
A looping in place 3/4 walk-cycle test, the animator can do whatever he or she wishes as long as it is in character. For compositing we’re just looking for some simple effects to make it look more polished, and ultimately no background is planned.

Gemini hair test animation
  • video

    [ANIMATIC]

This is an especially big one and any person or persons who might have an idea different for how to animate Gemini’s magically flowing hair and/or would like to try to experiment with it, please contact us with the idea right away.

Our current problem is that we would like to keep Gemini's hair with different colored strands like so, however, unlike one of our inspirations and references, Monster High, we cannot simply do shapes tweens (as far as we can tell?) because Gemini does not have straight hair but wavy/curly- and we want those curls to animate! We want a sort of "rolling waves" effect to her hair, something to match our mock screen shot.

Our current idea is to animate strands of Gemini’s hair frame by frame, clean up and color in Flash, and composite the hair onto her head, layering the strands over one another to give her a full head of hair. Hair animation will change mostly on a shot-by-shot basis, but for now we’re going to take a hint from Anime and simply use a still of Gemini to animate her hair to, but as usual, we’re going to try make this look nice in the end.

For background artists, Ai colorists, and compositing, we're going to make this test a shot with a nice background and lighting. We're going for something like the Manhatten bay area at night:

Should be a pretty nice shot!

Gemini 360 Turnaround
More of a technical animation than character, we’re looking to have an animator test out our puppet’s capabilities with creating the illusion of 2.5-D by doing a turnaround of the model- a complete 360. This does not require character animation, rather tweening, manipulation of shapes, etc. to create a clean, smooth turn in space.

Veil Tests
Veil Promo Animation

[ANIMATIC]

Similar in style to the Gemini Promo/Test Animation, this will test the capabilities of the facial puppet and act as a promotional piece to gain interest for the project from other talented possible volunteers.

Veil walk cycle (SIDE)
A looping profile walk cycle test of the character in place, the animator can do whatever he or she wishes as long as it is in character. Ultimately for compositing we’re just looking for some simple effects to make it look more polished, but as of right now no background is planned.

Promotional Scene Tests
note: more possible assignments here will become available as demand or need applies, but the general puppet tests (above) are currently our main concern.

Veil & Gem Kiss
video
[ANIMATIC]

This shot features our favorite couple sharing a passionate smooch. Gemini greedily wants some more but Veil just finds her adorable. He kisses her forehead. We cut to see just how they’ve managed to kiss – Gemini is standing on a pile of awkwardly stacked dishes.

The background will be a simple shot of a kitchen, with stovetop light framing our characters. Gemini is standing on some haphazardly stacked pots and pans.

Compositing should focus on the idea of shadow and light, how the light of the stove rim out two characters and frames them.

“Puppet Props Creation” requires the creation ofany props used in a scene- in this case the stack of utensils and kitchenware Gemini is standing on. This job can be broken into two halves- sketching of the props and then the coloring of them in illustrator.
